The History Of 3D Movies

3D movies have been around since the 1890s.  But according to Wikipedia, the first commercial 3D movie was shown in 1922.  It was named ‘The Power of Love” and was also the first known movie to use anaglyph methods for creating its visual depth.  It used dual strip projection, and the audience had to wear special anaglyph glasses.  During the next couple of years, a small handful of directors and producers experimented with producing 3D films, but they all used different systems and productions methods.

Polarized films
During the mid to late1930s, several people made 3D movies within the span of a couple of years.  Polarization became the new frontier for 3D movie production, but it was an expensive process.  Movie theater screens needed to have a silver coating in order for the images to show up - it was due to this requirement that the phrase “silver screen” became associated with movies.

Anaglyph films
The Second World War interrupted the experimentation with 3D movies.  But the post-war era of the 1950s made up for it, and is considered to be one of the ‘golden eras’ of 3D filmmaking.  Dozen’s of 3D movies were produced, and it was during this period that the anaglyph method became popular.  This era is especially remembered for the cardboard 3D glasses with colored cellophane lenses that movie goers had to wear.

Instead of shooting and projecting the films using dual strips, the anaglyph method layers the filmstrips on top of each other to create
the 3D effect.  The colored lenses in the disposable glasses filter out different spectrums of light in each lens and enhance the experience of seeing different views with each eye.

3D movie trends
Although all of the major Hollywood studios came out with several 3D movies during the early 1950, the trend didn’t last.  The movies proved to be expensive and difficult to show in the theaters because projection was still being done manually.  The film strips had to stay in synch in order to produce the depth effect, and if they slipped during projection or did not get properly loaded, the movie lost its visual impact.

By the 1970s, a single film strip format was invented, so there was a renewed interest in producing 3D movies.  But it was during the 1980s, with the birth of IMAX, when 3D became standardized and mainstream.  IMAX set a new standard of quality with its 70mm film projector and giant screen format.  And innovation continues in the 3D field with the introduction of sophisticated computer animation capabilities.  So what’s the next frontier for 3D movies? For that we need to look for a method that doesn’t require wearing glasses.
